WHAT LEADERS MUST DO

When General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt speaks to aspiring leaders at the company's management development center, his message is straightforward, yet profound. Immelt, who replaced the legendary Jack Welch as head of one of the world's most powerful corporations, simply explains the 10 activities he believes are essential for good leadership—a list he calls "Things Leaders Do."

He recently shared this list with Fast Company's editor-in-chief, John A. Byrne. Here are a few highlights.

  • Simplify constantly.
    "Every leader needs to clearly explain the top three things the organization is working on," Immelt says. "If you can't, then you're not leading well."
  • Stay true to your own style.
    "Leadership is an intense journey into yourself," he says. "You can use your own style to get anything done. It's about being self-aware. Every morning, I look in the mirror and say, 'I could have done three things better yesterday.'"
  • Leave a few things unsaid.
    "I may know an answer, but I'll often let the team find its own way," Immelt explains. "Sometimes, being an active listener is much more effective than ending a meeting with me enumerating 17 actions."
  • Stay disciplined and detailed.
    "Good leaders are never afraid to intervene personally on things that are important," he says.

    Positive thinking

    won't let you do everything,

    but it will let you do anything,

    better than negative thinking will."

    By Johann Campbell

    It has often been said that all you have to do is think positively and all your problems will disappear. Well, anyone who says that is likely to lie about other stuff too.

    Thinking positively will not make your problems disappear, but it will put you in an emotional state that lets you deal with your problems. Negative thinking puts you in a state where your problems deal with you.

    A negative person tends to "awfulise" and interprets incidents as

    Personal – Why me? What have I done to deserve this? They tend to see everything as a personal attack. They feel as if the world is out to get them. Negative people tend to be very self-conscious, always worried about what, they think, other people think or say about them.

    They tend to act as if it is;

    Pervasive – This always happens to me. Everybody hates me. A negative person goes for counselling. "Everybody hates me" he moans to the counsellor. "Don't be silly" says the counsellor "Everybody hasn't met you yet".

    They think that this state is;

    Permanent – What else can you expect, this is the way it is.

    Negative people have an attitude of negative expectancy and tend to expect the worst in every situation. They live in a state of doubt and fear.

    Positive people tend to "rationalise" and accept that they are;

    Involved, but realise that the incident was seldom specifically aimed at them. They realise that the person did not get up this morning with the specific intent of spoiling their day.

    Positive people see incidents as;

    Isolated, they realise that these things seldom happen, and they accept that things will not always go their way. They realise that while there are problems there are always solutions.

    Positive people see "negative" incidents as a mere;

    Interruption, in their plans. They are aware of difficulties but believe that they can be overcome, they choose to learn from each situation.

    Positive people have an attitude of positive expectancy and tend to live confidently, knowing that they can grow bigger because of the problems that they face.

    So choose from today to be positive but understand that "Positive thinking won't let you do everything but it will let you do anything better than negative thinking will."

    "Your life is in your hands."

    by Johann Campbell

    Your life is in your hands, even if it sometimes feels as if you are not in control, as if circumstances force you to do certain things and that you have no choice. You always have a choice and consciously or unconsciously you make choices based on what you think will be best for you under those specific circumstances.

    Sometimes you do things that you don't like to do, because the consequences of not doing them are worse than actually doing them. You will normally choose that route that you feel will cause the least pain. Just like paying tax. Very few people enjoy paying tax but the consequences of evading the tax man are so bad that it is better to pay your tax. Actually you should be grateful that you earn enough that you have to pay tax.

    Sometimes the immediate consequences of our actions are so nice that we do not think of the long term consequences that will possibly not be so pleasant. Go to a party, enjoy a drink or six, it is great no w, do you think of the headache that you will have tomorrow, and that is the least of the possible consequences, of course not. The food is so good, just one more bite, and, we can't let this go to waste no.w can we. Consequences, that really uncomfortable feeling when you have eaten too much, got to buy big.ger clothes, your old clothes have shrunk by the bite. That food you could not let go to waste has gone to your waist.

    What you must do is to consider carefully the choices that you make. What are the possible consequences of those choices, not only no.w but also long term. Can you live with them? Do you want them? Realise that the quality of your life depends on the consequences of your current actions. The life you lead today is the result of the consequences of your actions of yesterday. Your life is in your hands.

    That reminds me of the story of the yo.ung man who wanted to trick the wise old man who lived in his town. He caught a bird and with it hidden in his hand behind his back he went to the old man and asked him. "Old man is this bird that I have in my hand alive or dead?" Should the old man answer alive, he would quickly squeeze the life out of the bird. Should the old man answer dead, he would let the bird fly away. But the wise old man is really wise and he answers. "Young man the life that you are holding in your hand is in your control, you decide."

    From today, decide to take control of your life, the greatest and most precious gift that you have ever received or will ever receive. Decide to carefully consider the choices that you make and the things that you do, knowing that the quality of your life depends on the consequences of your current actions. Knowing that "Your life is in your hands."

    NATUROPATHS AND ORGANICS

    By: C. Edgar Sheaffer, VMD

              In my holistic veterinary consulting profession, I have the honor of being associated with a number of naturopathic physicians. Their philosophy of practice is built on the principles beginning with that of the healing power of nature, i.e. there is an inherent ability of the body to heal itself.  It is the role of the naturopathic physician to facilitate and enhance the self-healing process and to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery.

              All naturopaths discuss dietary habits with their patients.  Eating should be a time of healing and health.

    Foods to eat should include organic vegetables and fruits, organic grains, foods made with spouted organic grains and pure, filtered water.

    Supplements Based on Whole-Foods  Carl Rehnborg recognized that plants have the remarkable ability to turn inorganic matter—soil, sunlight, water and air—into organic matter (new plant cells). Animals and man cannot do this. The sustenance our bodies require to perform basic living functions must come either from plants or from other animals that eat plants. To put it in perspective, plants can exist without us, but we cannot exist without plants. Knowing that plants serve as the foundation for our food chain, it is only natural that NUTRILITE TM supplements should also be based on whole-plant foods.

    Phytonutrients—the Ultimate Source of Nutrition  Today, we know that whole-plant foods offer a wide range of advantages. We also know why these foods are so essential for optimal health. The answer can be summed up in a single word: phytonutrients. Fresh, whole plants are literally teeming with these natural compounds. A single tomato, for example, may contain thousands of different phytonutrients. And while the vast majority of them have yet to be identified, researchers do know that many phytonutrients offer important health benefits. Needless to say, researchers who support NUTRILITE products spend a great deal of time identifying and quantifying phytonutrients, with the goal of finding and concentrating nature’s most beneficial compounds.
